-An Adaptive Reuse Housing Solution-
The Women's Empowerment Network (WEN)
Design Evolution-Phase 1 and 2.
1-10 Years After Intervention
Phase 1 of the renovation process aims to expand the space allotted within the existing structure. The first floor plan extends at an angle to add additional space for women to congregate and live. It has an open-concept to allow women to have the maximum amount of control over their living environment--thus encouraging empowerment. The second floor houses the living corridors. The space is segmented into multiple rooms, offering women additional lofted space which overlooks the first floor reading room. Ultimately, programming for the first phase of the design process is meant to promote flexibility and control on behalf of the home occupants.
Phase 2 of the renovation process introduces architectural elements that aim to encourage economic development and promote entrepreneurship and self-help within the community. One of the major issues displaced women with children struggle with are healthy food options. This design adds a green house that enables women to grow their own food and provide healthy options for themselves and their children. The second floor includes an additional room to accommodate the growing demand of this housing unit. It also includes an activity room which encourages creativity in an effort to provide a structured environment within the community to produce work.

Design Evolved-Phase 3.
Phase 3 of the renovation process extends the building to an additional floor. The third floor serves as more structured programing. It offers and array of meeting spaces, creation spaces, and empowerment (self-determined programming) spaces. As the design progresses, the goal is to offer the type of living environment that promotes a network of support for women with children who have trouble accessing a quality housing stock. This housing typology is a prototype for transitional housing--to help women get on their feet until they are economically and socially stable enough to support themselves and their children.
The first intervention of the Women's Empowerment Network (phases 1-3), is meant to act as a prototype for creating a housing typology for single-mothers. As previously stated, this solution promotes empowerment for women who are raising children alone. It provides the types of spaces necessary for women to grow and be successful in terms of developing skills to own a home, while providing a safe, productive space for this to take place. |
