WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY NOW?
SITE ANAYSIS THE ESTABLISHED ISSUE REMAINS: This neighborhood was originally designed for a walkable and sustainable life but has lost the elements of work and growing and the living has suffered greatly as a result. The solution is to return what was lost. The Intervention takes 19 vacant residential lots and transforms them into a public pedestrian park. Within this park are nodes of program. Reserved spaces for community, development, and entrepreneurship will plug into the circulation path. The modular nodes are composed of industrial shipping containers, renovated to fulfil the needs of the community today. These containers are specifically composed and placed to promote the program within and ultimately promote new urbanism and sustainability. |

THE VISION
2018 Pedestrian Park 75,382 SF Cafe (1) 1780 SF Mechanic Shop/ Classroom (1) 1600 SF Local Public Market (2) 5120 SF Bridge Towers (3) 1980 SF The initial intervention will replace what was lost: sustainability. The program provides spaces for work, labor education, and individual growth, all positioned along a pedestrian park pathway. The modular, industrial shipping container structures establish a consistent form to show unity between the systems and how they depend on each other, while also connecting to the theme of industry which was once vital to this neighborhood's sustainability. 2023 Commercial Mechanic Shops (2) 1600 SF Each 4,800 SF Total By 2023, this development will extend beyond the vacant lot site and begin to engage with busy W Center St and W North Ave. New mechanic garages will be placed to infill commercial vacant lots. The local residents can use what they learned from the original mechanic shop classroom and apply their training for commercial use. 2028 Modular Shops (36) 160 SF Each 5760 SF Total The 10 year vision includes the same program from 2018 but includes new implementations. By 2028, the initial intervention and introduction to the main streets will have established a catalyst for new urban growth and sustainability. Local residents will need more compact yet affordable shops to sell healthy food, drinks, and provide various services not available in the community. These modules will continue to infill the voids in residential vacancies. 2033 Large Public Market (1) 10,240 SF The 2033 addition is a large scale public market located on the vacant lot between N 32nd St and N 33rd St , between W Clarke St and W Wright St. This addition will require the most funding, making it the final addition. A well established development will spur funding from the city and outside investors to develop this idea to its full potential. |
