OUTDOOR APPROACH TO COMMUNITY SHARING
|
The backyards and vacant lots of these rehabilitated houses become community social spaces. There is a designated area for group seating, intimate seating, and community event seating. These spaces are named by their function, "the cozy campfire", "the group social hour", and "close and impersonal." Having a variety of seating arrangements makes the space accepting of everyone. The open community space is good for cookouts, chess or checkers, movie nights, and light holiday football. Having a space to accommodate the young and the old will help to bring all walks of life together in the community.
There is a section of the community social space set aside for community gardening. The idea is for community members to grow fruits and vegetables. These fruits and vegetables can be sold back into the community for a low rate and then proceeds will be used to buy more seeds and tools. Another option is that community members can receive fruits and vegetables by working in the gardens as a co-op experience. The last option for the fruits and vegetables would be that they are used as preserves. Some fruits and vegetables would be set aside in for a community member that has fallen on a hard time. Like in the co-op idea they would then work off the fruits and vegetables by helping with the next harvest. |
