SITE PLAN |
The long-term plan involves placing a variety of programs throughout the neighborhood. A chain of vacancies exists already and tying them together with program may also help bring together previously separate blocks.
These programs are all food based, starting with production in the form of an orchard and raised beds. These are not intended to be a replacement for the grocery store, rather to generate an interest in food, where it comes from and how to cook with it. Preparation is the second component of the program - a community kitchen, which would be available for small events as well as classes. These are spaces where cooking is celebrated as a process. Finally, the most important, sharing. The project includes several different places of sharing: a pavilion as an outdoor, but protected, gathering space - the dining room of the community kitchen - furniture along the street. These elements are all both resources and responsibilities. They are productive spaces, both asking for care and giving back. |
SITE SECTIONS
Top: Shows the neighborhood as it is now. Individual homeowners feel responsibility for their property.
Bottom: Shows the neighborhood with proposed changes. The idea that when many neighbors feel responsibility for a place, it is better maintained. Previously empty spaces become places of gathering and meaning.
